In 1996, the Choir hit the road behind Free Flying Soul on what was supposed to be our final tour. When we signed with Tattoo Records, we agreed to one more run of shows with the understanding that this would be it. Thirty cities, four months, a “farewell tour” that started to feel like the last lap of a very long, very beautiful race.

Let It Fly was captured on that run, recorded over five nights in Pennsylvania, Texas, Michigan, Missouri, and my home state of Ohio. You will hear Derri, Steve, Tim, and me joined by Wayne Everett on percussion and Bill Campbell on guitar, with our friends Common Children opening the shows. The setlist reaches back through the catalog and lands squarely in the Free Flying Soul era: “Circle Slide,” “Kissers and Killers,” “Away With The Swine,” “Sad Face,” “Beautiful Scandalous Night,” “Restore My Soul,” and more.

At the time, we honestly did not know if the Choir would make another record after this. That tension is in the performances. The guitars are noisy and atmospheric, the rhythm section is swinging for the fences, and the whole thing feels a little rough around the edges in the best possible way. It is a live document of a band that thought it was saying goodbye.

This 1997 live album has been out of print for years and has never been available digitally until now. We have priced this first digital release at $8.88 as a small thank you to everyone who has stayed with us.
